Understanding Hardiness Zones
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers determine which plants are most likely to thrive in a specific location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree Fahrenheit zones.
Each zone is further divided into 'a' and 'b' sub-zones, representing 5-degree differences. For example, Zone 7a has winter lows of 0 to 5°F, while Zone 7b ranges from 5 to 10°F.
While hardiness zones are an excellent starting point for plant selection, remember that other factors like humidity, rainfall, wind, and soil type also affect plant survival. Our interactive filters help you refine your plant search beyond just temperature tolerance.
